The hits keep on coming here in “Crash Alley” in East Falls. Usually, East Falls is portrayed and publicized as a walkable community. What most fail to realize, however, is that to do so you may place your life in peril. Accidents which begin in the street, many times end on our sidewalks -- placing pedestrians at risk. In 2011, the short span of time between December 26th and January 12th was marred with at least three accidents in the vicinity of one of East Falls’ most prominent landmarks, the Queen Lane Reservoir.
On December 27th, one of our community’s most civically engaged residents, out for her daily walk, came upon a wrecked vehicle on Fox Street near Midvale Avenue. We have no details on this one, but the pictures taken by our neighbor reveals once again just how dangerous it can be to take a walk through our community. The car’s bumper, disengaged from the chassis, can be seen in above photo lying on the canopy of the lawn of the corner property at that intersection. Imagine the catastrophic scene had someone been walking on that stretch of sidewalk at the moment of the incident. The second incident occurred as a neighbor on Queen Lane near McMichael had just arrived home and witnessed someone attempting a U-turn on Queen Lane. The street’s broad girth encourages folks to do this, but this time, a vehicle speeding down the street hit the first auto. With fire hydrants being taken out and cars flipping on their roofs in the middle of the night, Queen Lane continues to be the scene of incidents of all types. This is the same street that was publicized a year ago to have been the beneficiary of newly constructed traffic calming storm water basins! As of the 3rd weekend of 2012, a telephone pole and cobra lamp were strewn around as debris on the sidewalk and lawn on the east side of Henry Avenue near Tilden Street, the wreckage of our third incident. We have no details on this one, but our inspection of the site on January 14th revealed foam and some pieces of wreckage. What will it take to get City Hall’s attention and help? Stay tuned.
