The second in a series of articles about three local educational facilities currently engaged in the East Falls Community Council’s Educational Institution Land Use Project.

Drexel University College of Medicine is the consolidation of two venerable medical schools with rich and intertwined histories: Hahnemann Medical College and Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. Established in 1848 and 1850, respectively, they were two of the earliest medical colleges in the United States, and Woman’s was the very first medical school for women in the world.

Today, with over 1,100 medical students, Drexel University College of Medicine has the largest medical student enrollment of any private medical school in the nation. Graduate students number more than 500, and the College is the academic partner in the education of some 550 medical residents. There are more than 700 clinical and basic science faculty, and more than 1,700 affiliate and volunteer faculty.

The College of Medicine's main campus, Queen Lane, is in a suburban-like setting in the East Falls section of Philadelphia. The Queen Lane Medical Campus is a state-of-the-art wireless facility designed for the purposes of research and teaching basic science and clinical skills. The seminar rooms, library, laboratories, study lounges, and recreational areas are available for student use around the clock.

In addition, the campus is home to one of the most innovative medical simulation centers in the country. The Independence Blue Cross Medical Simulation Center at Drexel University College of Medicine includes the latest high-fidelity human patient simulators to help students and practicing physicians gain experience in a realistic, interactive clinical environment with the newest technology available.

Queen Lane also houses Drexel University College of Medicine’s Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership, as well as the College’s Legacy Center: Archives and Special Collections, a vast and impressive compilation of records and heritage of Drexel University College of Medicine and its predecessor institutions. The bulk of the collections fall between 1835 and the present, and include books, photographs, costumes, medical instruments and other teaching tools.

Additional facilities for Drexel University College of Medicine are located at the Center City campus, adjacent to Hahnemann University Hospital. Students can receive clinical education at 25 affiliated hospitals and ambulatory sites chosen for commitment to teaching as well as medical excellence.

Drexel University College of Medicine’s clinical practice, Drexel Medicine®, is a patient-focused practice emphasizing quality, innovation and community service, and enhanced by physician involvement in the research and educational programs. Physicians see patients at a number of locations throughout the greater Philadelphia region, including a multi-specialty practice on Jamestown Street in Manayunk.

Drexel University College of Medicine houses one of just 21 National Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health designated by the Department of Health & Human Services. The College's HIV/AIDS primary care practice is the largest on the East Coast and in the top 5 nationwide. In addition, the College has established one of the largest centers for spinal cord research in the Mid-Atlantic region, and founded one of the leading centers for malaria study in the nation.

Faculty clinicians are highly respected in numerous other specialties, including cardiology, pain management, sports medicine and toxicology.
