EFTT Conducts Tree Check PDF Print E-mail

’Tis grand to plant trees, but it is grim to see young trees struggling to survive.

This spring and summer, East Falls Tree Tenders (EFFT) will participate in the PHS Tree Checker Program to check the health of trees planted fall 2010 and April 2011. This endeavor is in conjunction with “Plant One Million.” According to PHS it is “the nation’s largest multi-state tree campaign,” taking place in “ 3 counties of the Greater Philadelphia Region, including New Jersey and Delaware.”

EFTT presents every tree recipient with a bucket and an information sheet with species, watering, and care information. This spring, a “Spring Tune-Up” sheet will be emailed to recipients along with watering reminders. The PHS Tree Checker program adds another level of attention to the trees. According to PHS, checkers will “evaluate key tree health factors.” The information will be entered on spreadsheets to be returned to PHS, while property owners will receive a note with information on the condition of the tree and its site. PHS staff will then review the spreadsheets, getting a clear picture of the health of the newly planted trees. Whether it is a six pound infant or a newly planted Red Maple (Acer rubrum), the care given during the first year of life “often determines its chances for long-term survival.”

Good news: Special thanks to Herb Henzie for the new stakepounder and to Ed Ruback, who will be pounding stakes near those trees planted in April. Sad news: last month the tree dedicated in honor of Cynthia Kishinchand in  April 2010 at Mifflin School was accidently mowed down. The School District has been notified.
