Finally. A Playground! PDF Print E-mail
By Tom Sauerman, President
December 2011

After eight years of wishing and working, starting and re-starting, the community playground for children ages 2-12 has become a reality through the efforts of the EFCC Playground Committee. The most recent movers and shakers, Sarah Taylor and Jen Arnoldi, are thanked for finally getting the ball over the goal line.

Families have been involved in the planning process. Sarah and Jen collected over 100 children's drawings about what the playground should look like. A Design Day for parents and children  helped sort out the many possibilities of slides and climbing equipment.

Councilman Curtis Jones provided City funds to make the playground at Inn Yard Park possible. Thanks to Stephanie Craighead and Tee Jay Boudreau of the Dept. of Parks & Recreation. Thanks, too, to Slices, Falls Presbyterian Church, Brothers’ Deli, and East River Bank for donating refreshments on the ribbon-cutting day, December 3.

Land Use Progress
The first of three major East Falls educational institutions’ draft plans is complete. The Drexel School of Medicine draft is in this Fallser. Three groups have been working with the institutions (Drexel, Penn Charter, and Philadelphia University) to plan land use development for the next ten years. They will address new construction, building renovation, greening, traffic, parking, lighting, property appearance, and community relations. The Penn Charter working group anticipates presenting its report to the community in January.

Rivage
Rivage is the name of the vacant land across the street from East River Bank. In collaboration with the Redevelopment Authority and EFDC, EFCC hosted a meeting to review two developers’ proposals for development of the land. The 80+ people who attended heard and discussed the developers’ plans. See the full report in this issue of the Fallser. See the EFCC website for complete details.

Holiday Sing
The annual Holiday Sing will be held on Wednesday, December 21 at 7:00pm in McMichael Park. Join neighbors and friends at the sing and then wend your way to the Falls Presbyterian Church for hot chocolate, warm cider, and cookies.

Traffic
The Traffic Committee sent a list to Councilman Jones of its top three items for remediation. The list included: intersection of Henry & School House Lane, STOP signs on Queen Lane, and STOP signs on School House Lane. More extensive projects are still on the table.

Next Meeting
We have no meeting scheduled in December. On January 9 we’ll meet at the Falls Presbyterian Church. The guest speaker is Dr. Darryl Ford, Penn Charter’s Head of School.
