The City of Philadelphia Recycling Office has announced that the City is expanding its innovative single stream residential recycling collection method to include Northwest Philadelphia on July 7, 2008. The following sections of the City to be served are: Germantown, Mt. Airy, Manayunk, Roxborough, West Oak Lane, Chestnut Hill and East Falls. The completion of this initiative makes Philadelphia the largest city on the east coast with single stream recycling.
Approximately 80,000 households located in Northwest Philadelphia will join 454,000 Northeast, South, Southwest, West and Center City Philadelphia residences in being able to set out all recyclables, including flattened cardboard and #1 and #2 plastic containers (generally beverage and detergent containers), into one container for curbside pickup. “July 7th marks the completion of a process that was launched in summer 2006,” stated City of Philadelphia Streets Commissioner Clarena I.W. Tolson. “The city’s recycling tonnage in the single stream recycling areas has increased more than 35% during that two-year period. Single stream recycling makes it easier for residents, and it is vitally important that we increase the amount of materials we divert from our waste stream.” Now, all Philadelphia residents will be able to place steel and aluminum cans, glass jars and bottles, newspapers, paper items such as food boxes, catalogs, magazines, and junk mail, cardboard and #1 and #2 plastics in the same container. Check the bottom of plastic containers for the number to see if the item is acceptable. Residents may continue to use their blue recycling bins for curbside collection. Should one bin not be enough to hold all recyclables, residents may add another container and mark it “recycling.” For more information regarding recycling, please contact the City of Philadelphia Streets Department’s recycling hotline at 215-685-7329 or visit recyclingPAYS.phila.gov . |
