So, you had a taste of summer over the Memorial Day weekend! Well, wasn’t it wonderful? Looking for more action? East Falls has two great events in June, held annually, each very different and both loads of fun!
Bike Race Block Party Set yourself up at the river’s edge on Sunday, June 6th at the East Falls Development Corp’s Bike Race Block Party to enjoy the world famous International Pro Cycling Classic. Ten circuits (twenty times), you can watch hundreds of the world’s best cyclists whip past the community gateway, Kelly Drive and Midvale Avenue, pedaling at breakneck speed to the infamous Manayunk Wall—and back again—a grueling 14.4 miles each circuit! The day also includes the Liberty Classic with more than 100 women cyclists competing. This 57.6-mile race consists of four laps of the same circuit with four steep climbs up the Manayunk Wall. Ring those bells, cheer ’til you’re hoarse, then refresh yourself with a spin around our Block Party with its many community and business booths lining the roadway, from Midvale Ave. to Ferry Road. Lots of children’s activities and a health fair bigger and better than previous years will line East Park Drive with a Beer Garden for the “over twenty-oners” under the Twin Bridges, thanks to The Pour House, Billy Murphy’s Saloonery and the Philadelphia Canoe Club!
All this, and music too, compliments of East Falls’ own Limelight Arts! Hey, hey, get your food, drinks, community resource info and bells, bells, bells (very collectible) to urge those cyclists on! Activities start at 9am and run ’til 3pm. Enjoy lunch (Epicure Café, R&D Foods, Franco’s Trattoria & Trolley Car Café at The Bathey) plus icy treats at Mrs. K’s and Rita’s Water Ice stands. Or, enjoy a respite from the action, only a few steps to Johnny Mañana’s, Shan Chuan Chinese, Golden Crust or Slices Pizza. The kids will sleep well that night! Flea Market in McMichael Park On Saturday, June 12th, it’s East Falls Community Council’s annual Flea Market in McMichael Park (Henry Ave. at Midvale). A bargain hunter’s paradise if you’re a shrewd shopper. Or, even if you’re not. Toys, collectibles, furniture, clothes, even “junk” – don’t knock it, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Last minute decision to set up? Call Phil at 215-842-3794 to see if there is an available space for you to hawk your wares. Bargain hunting runs from 9am to 3pm, so come early to get in on the best deals, or come later and take advantage of the “I don’t want to cart this back with me” vendor specials. Summer in the City – not too bad for those who live in Philly’s “best kept secret” neighborhood!
