Henry and Elisabeth Ross of East Falls are Fallser carriers who remembered to take a copy of The Fallser with them when vacationing during spring break. Pictured here, the brother and sister are standing at the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, near the cable car terminal and the feeding station for the Barbary Macaques—the only wild monkeys in Europe. Nearby are the British WW II fortifications designed to fend off a planned German invasion.
Gibraltar is one of the most heavily fortified places in the world, not having been conquered since the British took it in 1704. It has been British for longer than Philadelphia has been American. It was from here that the Berber, Tariq ibn Ziyad, launched the Moorish invasion of the Iberian peninsula. Its name comes from the Arabic Jebel el Tariq, for Mountain of Tariq.
Chris Brock of Coulter Street made certain to pack a copy of The Fallser for his recent trip to Italy. Seen here with the hometown “rag,” Chris is on Monte Solaro in Capri. A 15 minute chair-lift ride took him to the top to enjoy the spectacular view of the Bay of Naples and its many surrounding islands.
