It’s a terrible invasion of privacy when a thief rummages through your car, or enters your home while your away, or “invades” while you are sleeping - and members of East Falls Town Watch (EFTW) do all we can to curtail these incidents. We share in the upset of our neighbors. We share in the grief of the families who have lost loved ones due to accidents, or crime.

Yet, sad to report, in some cases, the problem - the tragedies, even - that have come to pass in recent days in East Falls - may have been prevented had the victim taken the basic precautions the police have long been advocating - i.e.: Lock your windows and doors. Clear your vehicle of all valuables and vestiges of valuables. Wear light-colored clothing when walking or biking at night. This is not to blame the victim, but merely to galvanize support for these simple safety measures.

Burglary Alert! PDF Print E-mail

March 2012

Image Four weeks into the job, the new commander of the 39th P.D., Captain Verdell Johnson, introduced himself at a community meeting, and declared: “The big issue here that I don’t like - the burglary problem. We have a serious burglary problem in the 39th.” He cited the number of burglaries (30) recorded between December 22nd and January 23rd…”That’s a 114% increase this year compared to the same 30-day stretch of a year ago.”

(As of writing, the Captain was expected to appear on February 28th at Downs Hall, Philadelphia University along with Lt. Ed Bier, director of the 39th’s P.S.A. #1, where neighbors could meet and question the officers regarding safety and crime issues).

Crime Prevention Officer Joseph Lukaitis distributed a Burglary Alert enumerating straightforward recommendations to deter burglar: 1. Secure all windows: Easily visible locks may deter some thieves, as a window lock forces the thief to break the glass, and risks attracting attention; 2. Secure all doors - Use a deadlock, with a key; 3. Good lighting can deter a thief; 4. Visible burglar alarms make burglars think twice.

Change in Command at 39th District PDF Print E-mail

Image Adieu, Captain Glenn! The longest serving commander of the 39th P.D. in recent memory is Captain Stephen Glenn, who has been resigned.

Apparently, Captain Glenn may finish out his distinguished career (three years) in the department of Civil Affairs. An officer and a gentleman, he made meetings fun. Erudite and witty, he was known to quote poets, and bellow Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” at the drop of a hat. And, in that hat he keeps the picture of his late father, also a policeman, who had grown up in the vicinity of the 39th. Beyond his Irish charm and persona, however, are his extensive knowledge of police work and of the history of the Philadelphia P.D. He knew his officers, he understood human nature, and he made himself accessible to the citizenry…He knew the “big picture” - and he leaves big shoes to fill. We bid dear Captain Glenn a fond fare-thee-well:

Of course, we’re not left in the lurch, and we look forward to meeting our new commander, Captain Verdell Johnson, described by Captain Glenn in his announcement of the changing of the guard (The Fallser, January 2012) as extremely capable.

Our Neighbors Keepers PDF Print E-mail

January 2012

Image Many of us know the parable of the Good Samaritan - the cogent point being - a stranger got involved.

So reported Lt. Ed Bier, of the 39th P.D. regarding an ordinary morning in December, when an ordinary resident walking down the 3300 block of Indian Queen Lane was attacked by two males. It was a case of apparent attempted robbery, thwarted by passersby whose help also let to two arrests.

We are our neighbors’ keepers. We thank these Good Samaritans! Lt. Bier was upbeat at the December 15th Police Service Area (PSA) #1 meeting, reporting an 18% drop in Part I crimes, and a “big drop-off” in residential burglaries. “Weather has a bearing. In police work, ‘the colder, the better,’…But the decline is also due to police patrols and citizens being more cautious,” he said and we’d like to think to some extent, due to citizen patrols via Town Watch.
