Lieutenant Focuses on Police Work in East Falls PDF Print E-mail

Image The Philadelphia Police Department recently subdivided each of its districts into Police Service Areas (PSAs). Basically, these are geographic zones led by a lieutenant with a team of sergeants and officers responsible for coordinating police services within the smaller, defined area.

Fallser editor Julie Camburn, along with a handful of East Falls Town Watch (EFTW) members and 39th P.D. Crime Prevention Officer Joseph Lukaitis met on February 15th at Philadelphia University with Lt. Michael Deal, who is new to the 39th and who now heads up the Police Service Area #1, into which East Falls has been placed. PSA 1 extends into Germantown.

Profile of a Victim: Plugged In & Tuned Out PDF Print E-mail

February 2010

Image A recent article in The New York Times parlayed an old saw - “He can’t walk and chew gum at the same time.”  - into the modern multi-tasking pickle: S/he not only tries to chew gum and walk, s/he jogs, focuses on deep breaths, listens to the IPod, - all the while burning sole and burning calories, and earning a kind of ecstatic state of mind and body.

But is s/he aware of the surroundings? That would hardly be the case - and that brings us to the nub of this article: Crime does occur when opportunity presents itself. Accidents happen, too.

Over and over and over again, police in the 39th P.D. exhort us to be aware of our surroundings at all times. Whether shopping at a mall, putting gas in the tank, waiting for a bus, jogging along the drive - we need to be vigilant and know what’s going on around us. We need to trust our instincts. We need to use our cell phones (those modern day “balls and chains” as author Stephen King describes them) to call 9-1-1 to report any suspicious or unsafe activity. In other words, we need to be on the ball to fend off potential, lurking opportunists, and to diminish the likelihood of accidental harm.

East Falls Town Watch will meet on Thursday, February 11th at 7:30pm at its HQ, 3540 Indian Queen Lane. All neighbors are invited. Please report any concerns or make any inquires via 215-848-2033.

OOPS! Last month’s EFTW article had incorrect photo/caption. Here are both Good Neighbor Award photos w/correct captions:

Accepting a Good Neighbor Award on behalf of Dottie Flanagan of Sunnyside Avenue is Dick Clark, recipient of Ms. Flanagan’s quick response. “I’m lucky to be alive,” Dick told Officer Randy Modres who presented the Award, “I am so grateful to Dottie for coming to my aid the night I was shot.”

Enlistees Sought for Sentry Duty PDF Print E-mail

ImageWe turn a page and enter 2010 with lanterns held aloft. As ever, our objective is to keep the neighborhood safe with proactive patrols, maintaining watchfulness, shedding light on situations that could fester into major problems. We support the 39th P.D. as eyes and ears. We serve as sounding boards and reference stations for neighbors’ concerns. We subscribe to the “broken windows” theory that a cleaned-up, cared-for neighborhood deters crime. Our ranks come from many walks of life, including artists, security personnel, realtors, retailers, teachers, homemakers, retired tool & die makers, cooks, and delivery persons.

There is much to do and all are welcomed to chip in. In particular, we need drivers (day or night) to participate in patrols, and day or night walkers or riders for same. We do some bike patrols and could use help there, as well.

Your participation in one patrol a month, one meeting a month, would be a grand help, while some may want to do even more.

We urge you to be safe, to be aware of your surroundings at all times and never to hesitate to call 9-1-1 in this New Year. We invite you to meet at our HQ, 3540 Indian Queen Lane at 7:30pm on Thursday, January 14th. Our telephone: 215-848-2033.

EFTW A round of applause and a tip of our (new) cap were extended to East Falls resident Gene Mattioni, Esq. at our November 12th meeting. With his sponsorship, Mr. Mattioni’s center city law form, Mattioni, Ltd., funded the purchase of knit caps, baseball caps and visors for East Falls Town Watch (EFTW) members - black, bearing the EFTW name,  logo, and our motto, “Serving our community,” embroidered in orange.

EFTW is committed to community patrols. The caps and visors are a giant step forward in identifying patrollers on their rounds, and in promoting the good work rendered by members. Thank you, thank you, Mr. Mattioni, for your generosity and your vote of confidence in EFTW.
