July 2010

ImageWith summer come lots of vacations and weekends away from home - just as it should be. Be safe and enjoy yourselves. But who is “minding the store?” East Falls Town Watch (EFTW) urges neighbors to take basic steps to thwart potential burglars. It’s a common-sense litany to be dismissed at one’s peril.
• Lock all windows and doors.
• Install perimeter, motion-detector lighting. Set up indoor timer lights and sounds.
• Have mail and newspaper deliveries suspended. Ask a trusted neighbor to mind the store - just in case a burglar is lurking - as you head out into the sun

Together We Can Make a Difference PDF Print E-mail

ImageIdeally, the safety and pleasantness of East Falls is permeating contiguous neighborhoods day by day. But, folks, we’re not there yet and reverse osmosis is ever a possibility.

Hemmed in as we are by areas of the city that have grave antisocial behaviors and uncomfortable crime rates, it only stand to reason the East Fallsers need to make a concerted effort to keep such problems at bay, to the extent that caring neighbors can. Be it noted that some East Fallsers are also vandals, “knuckleheads,” and/or criminals.

The 39th Police District’s Lt. Michael Deal has scheduled a Police Service Area #1 community meeting on Tuesday, May 4th, 7PM at Philadelphia University’s Downs Auditorium - off Schoolhouse Lane - east of Henry Avenue. This is a great opportunity for ordinary citizens to have their voices heard, to press the 39th for concrete actions - right in our own backyard. Please show up! For more information, please contact the 39th at 215-686-3900, or East Falls Town Watch (EFTW) at 215-848-2033.

Recent complaints from neighbors concerned the “constant tagging” of the concrete walls along the ramps of City Line - Ridge Avenue corridor. Neighbors are trying to get a bead on when this is happening in order to bolster a request for police presence. Anyone with information is urged to call EFTW. Everyone is urged to report all graffiti immediately to 215-686-0000.

Another neighbor reported “startling” a would-be burglar apparently casing a residence in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon. This occurred near The Falls of Schuylkill Library. The stalker was described as a white male, “nice looking, 18-24 years old,” wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt. He was apparently alone and on foot, peering into windows at both the front and rear of residences about 3pm in the afternoon. This type of suspicious activity needs to be reported to 911. Accumulated data of this nature assists police in following leads.

Police Service Area #1 (which includes most of East Falls) of the 39th Police District held its first meeting at Philadelphia University. Lt. Michael Deal, seen here with map of his area, presented facts and strategies to attendees. An East Falls family reported wheels being stolen off their car in early March –a weekday evening in broad nightlight – i.e., between 8:40 and 9pm, when the city (and neighborhood) was still awake.

What is particularly galling in this case is that the streetlight near the parked car was burned out—a fact which had been reported to the City’s 3-1-1 system on February 20th. “It took 18 or 19 days before that light was fixed,” lamented one neighbor.

So, under the cover of a law city’s darkness, a family was victimized.

There were, in a sense, witnesses: Some neighbors were aware of a car with a loud muffler, but thought it was waiting for someone or making a delivery.

One resident went outside, listened and became suspicious when the sound became louder. When approached, however, the vehicle, which had dark windows and no way to see inside, abruptly backed up Bowman Street and sped off over Vaux Street, preventing the resident from reading the license plate.
