Be Cautious, Be Careful, Be Vigiliant PDF Print E-mail

December 2011

‘Tis the season for sharing, for shopping, for caroling, for hoping, and with Charles Dickens’ Tiny Tim, our wish for all our neighbors is “God Bless Us, Everyone!”

Still, we caution vigilance.

In the rush and revelry of the season, along with the 39th P.D., East Falls Town Watch reminds neighbors that a few folks of ill-will lurk about determined to take advantage of the unsuspecting. We cite the late great American poet Carl Sandburg in urging you to “Be careful. Be careless. Be Careful,” as you go about business and pleasure this holiday season.

Specifically, be aware of your surroundings at all times. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 to report unusual vehicles, persons, activities. Remove all valuables from vehicles. Keep all windows and doors securely locked.

‘Tis a time for making resolutions! Would that a few more men and women of goodwill would resolve to do a Town Watch patrol, a litter clean-up, a graffiti erasure or paint-over during the New Year. We are a great group (pictured) to work with and have amassed an impressive portfolio of accomplishments this past year alone -- abandoned property documented, reported; removed (tires); burned-out street lights re-illuminated; graffiti erased, repainted or reported to 215-686-0000; litter picked up, along with Philadelphia University volunteers; neighborhood problems resolved, including parking and vandalism issues.

Albeit a rough estimate, we logged approximately 500 linear miles and donated at least 300 hours of service on patrols alone. Without a doubt, we could do more, if only more neighbors would pitch in. Further information is available by attending one of EFTW’s monthly meetings, held the second Thursday of the month, 7:30pm at our HQ, 3540 Indian Queen Lane. Next meeting is scheduled for December 8th. All are invited.

The nnext monthly 39th P.D. meeting, open to the public, will be held on Monday December 26th at 39th HQ, 22nd & Hunting Park Ave., 7pm, a general community meeting; and also Thursday, December 15th, 7pm at the Old Academy Carfax Building, 3540 Indian Queen Lane, where residents of Southwest Germantown and East Falls will meet with Lt. Ed Bier and P.O. Cherry Coleman to talk shop. Please do not hesitate to attend any of these gatherings. Further information is available through EFTW at 215-848-2033 or the 39th P.D. at 215-686-2751 or 3390.
