Lt. Ed Bier of the 39th Police Dist.’s P.S.A.#1 expressed shock and dismay at the spike in crime in East Falls when he reported to East Falls and Southwest Germantown neighbors at the August 15th P.S.A.#1 meeting, held at Down Auditorium on Philadelphia University campus. “The difference this month compared to last month?” asked Lt. Bier, “East Falls.” Precious metals - copper and bronze - in the form of downspouts, pipes and doors to mausoleum - were stolen from homes, campuses and cemeteries. Stained glass was removed from a Lehigh Avenue cemetery as well. Desktop computers were removed from the basement of Gutman Library at Philadelphia University.
“Theft from auto was reported on The Oak Road, Fisk Avenue and Kelly Drive. Attempted theft from auto was reported at the East Falls train station and the 2900 block of Schoolhouse Lane. Tires and wheels were stolen from a van parked on the street in the 3400 block of Midvale. A flat screen TV was reported stolen from a Dobson Mills residence. Some arrests were made thanks to a combination of alert neighbors who called 9-1-1, brazenness or stupidity on the part of alleged criminals, and, good police work. Some caveats: For vehicles: Remove all valuables from sight, or conceal them. For homes: Lock all doors and windows. Use lighting to help deter crime.
