Adieu, Captain Glenn! The longest serving commander of the 39th P.D. in recent memory is Captain Stephen Glenn, who has been resigned.
Apparently, Captain Glenn may finish out his distinguished career (three years) in the department of Civil Affairs. An officer and a gentleman, he made meetings fun. Erudite and witty, he was known to quote poets, and bellow Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” at the drop of a hat. And, in that hat he keeps the picture of his late father, also a policeman, who had grown up in the vicinity of the 39th. Beyond his Irish charm and persona, however, are his extensive knowledge of police work and of the history of the Philadelphia P.D. He knew his officers, he understood human nature, and he made himself accessible to the citizenry…He knew the “big picture” - and he leaves big shoes to fill. We bid dear Captain Glenn a fond fare-thee-well: Of course, we’re not left in the lurch, and we look forward to meeting our new commander, Captain Verdell Johnson, described by Captain Glenn in his announcement of the changing of the guard (The Fallser, January 2012) as extremely capable.
The work of the East Falls Town Watch (EFTW) goes on, as do the incidents reported by neighbors that are cause for concern - car break-ins and residential burglaries. We urge neighbors to stay alert and not hesitate to call 9-1-1 to report suspicious persons or vehicles. EFTW has set a 2012 goal to increase the number of patrols we do. To that end, however, we need more neighbors to pitch in. Please call us (215-848-2033)if you can help staff a patrol and plan to attend EFTW’s monthly meeting on Thursday, February 9th at 7:30pm at our HQ, 3540 Indian Queen Lane. Two other important February safety meetings to which all neighbors are invited: Monday, the 27th, 6pm, at 39th P.D. HQ, 22nd & Hunting Park Ave; and Tuesday, the 28th, 6pm, at Philadelphia University’s Downs Hall, off School House Lane. Both these meeting are organized by officers of the 39th P.D. In closing, EFTW would be remiss were we to fail to acknowledge the passing away of a great man of the town - Billy Murphy. Gregarious and generous, a mainstay of East Falls, there is no other. We are proud to have named him our 2008 Good Neighbor awardee. We express our deepest condolences to those who knew and loved him.
